The Plot of Cyntoia Brown, who was released in 2019 after 15 years in prison for a murder which she and supporters long argued was a clear case of self-defense, takes center stage in the new Netflix documentary Murder to Mercy. Back in 2006, Brown was convicted of killing a 43 year old real estate agent, Johnny Allen, who slicited the then 16 year old sex worker at a Nashville sonic resturant in 2004.

The documentary follows the story of Cyntoia Brown, from the week she was put on trial for killing Alien until six years until her conviction. It overs her defense team leading up to the trail and the day jury that convicted her for murder and aggravated robbery.
When Brown’s release from prison was announced in August of last year, the National Women’s Law Center shared a message of celebration. The justice-minded organization, however also shared a reminder that she never should have been in prison in the first place and the support for other in similar predicaments must continue.
