The 9 Episode original series from director Paolo Sorrentino is his second series set in the world of the modern papacy. The New Pope is written by Sorrentino with Umberto Centarello and Stefano Bises and stars Jude Law and John Malkovich. Season 1 was able to make an amazing response. Now, It’s difficult to say whether there’d be a season 2 the show and If it’s been canceled. The New Pope is actually a continuation of The Young Pope.
Jude Law would be reprising his role as Pope Pius Xlll. John Malkovich would be reprising his role as the successor of Pope Plus Xlll, Pope John Paul lll.
But one of the most notable scenes and certainly the most internet-famous takes place in between the land of the living and the world of the dead. Perhaps Sorrentino’s motivation wasn’t as complex as the ideas his scene elicits, but that’s The New Pope in a nutshell: an enthralling blend of high brow ideas and low brow humor. Those themes are inspired by the terrorist attacks of a few years ago that happened in France. Something that we, as Europeans, have felt very close to and that has led me to reflect on those issues. John Malkovich, besides being a splendid actor, was perfect to represent the idea of wisdom, dark, and mysterious charm that the character must-have. In addition, Malkovich is an icon, a perfect match with the figure of The Pope also iconic by definition.
the New Pope also had Marilyn Manson and Sharon Stone cameos, where they played themselves meeting the pope. At the end of New Pope finale, it appears that Lenny has died and gone back to heaven presented as a beautiful, dreamlike beach. Lenny rises, stayed a few days on earth, and then dies. Like Jesus This was the idea from which I started disturbing and reassuring assonance between the divine and the human.
