The story of The Nurse is set at Nykobing Falster Hospital in the region of Denmark. The series tells the true story of Christina Aistrup Hansen, who was a nurse and in 2017 she was convicted of four counts of attempted manslaughter after numerous patients died while they were under her care.

This follows a newly qualified nurse who started working in a hospital and befriends Christina and begins developing suspicions about her colleague after various dramatic close calls while working on the night shifts together.
In 2015, Danish police got a phone call from a nurse who told her fears that Christina had deliberately killed patients and she believed that she may do so again after several patients had suddenly died despite appearing to be in stable conditions. Many Danish were following their own suspicions

The character has been played in the series by Fanny Louise Bernth. Pernille Kurzmann Larsen is the central character in the Netflix series and was a nurse who contacted the police about her suspicions of Christina.
After her studies, Pernille Larsen began her first nursing job when she started working at Nykobing Falster Hospital in Southern Denmark and hoped to have a good first impression on her colleagues. Larsen befriended Christina Aistrup Hansen who was regarded as the top nurse in the hospital.
But after numerous incidents occurred while working on the shifts with Hansen, Pernille started to suspect her colleague of foul play and had been deliberately attempting to harm or even kill patients by giving fatal doses of morphine and diazepam.
Pernille went to the police with her concerns and Christina got arrested on initial charges of murder and attempted manslaughter. After a trial of month-long, Christina was found guilty, and in 2017, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison for 4 counts of murder.

Pernille is still in the hospital and working as a nurse at Nykobing Falster Hospital as of May 2023. As shown in The Nurse, she is married to Niels Lunden, who is her former colleague at the hospital.
