Mary Quant’s Husband, Alexander Plunket Greene, Was A Fashion Executive
In 1953, Mary Quant met Alexander Plunket Greene, who would later become her spouse and business partner. Alexander was a descendant of the Irish musician Harry Plunket Greene, and the philosopher Bertrand Russell and the Duke of Bedford were his cousins. He was known for his eccentric personality, often attending class in his mother’s gold shantung silk pajamas and playing jazz on the trumpet.
Alexander and a friend opened the Bazaar boutique in Chelsea’s King’s Road, where Mary was the first buyer. It was only a short time before she began selling her designs there, including the miniskirt, and Bazaar became famous as a young people’s store. The couple remained married from 1957 until Alexander died in 1990.
He brought her designs to the masses by launching the Ginger Group, a complete Mary Quant collection that later expanded.
In the 1960s, Plunket Greene and his wife revolutionized British fashion with striking window displays and sales of Quant’s designs. Bazaar was among the first stores to sell affordable clothes in bold colors and simple shapes.
The Ginger Group brand was introduced in 1963 by Plunket Greene and Quant, offering a more accessible line for the general public. They went on to expand their business to the United States.

In the 1950s, she accomplished an art education degree from Goldsmiths College, where she encountered her future husband, Alexander Plunket Greene, who later supported her brand’s establishment.
