On Saturday, what had been a joyous day of shopping at a sizable mall outside of Dallas quickly became a nightmare when a shooter opened fire, killing at least eight people and injuring seven more.

The perpetrator’s identity remained unknown until Monday when NBC News reported that law enforcement officials confirmed the shooter was Mauricio Garcia, a 33-year-old alleged neo-Nazi sympathizer.
Garcia was said to have been well prepared, sporting a pistol, an AR-15 assault rifle, and a tactical vest. The police discovered more guns and ammunition when they searched his car, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
To me matters worse, Garcia was wearing a patch on his chest that read “rwds,” believed to be a reference to the phrase “right-wing death squad,” a term commonly used in extremist online circles.
Later, Garcia was shot and killed by a police officer who was on the scene, yet the incident still counts as the second-worst mass shooting in the US this year and the second in Texas in the last week.
