Investigation into the case
The gunman responsible for the shooting has been identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia. In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials found an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun at the location where the shooter, Garcia, was killed. Garcia’s acquisition of the weapon used in the shooting raises more questions about how, when, and where he did it.
On Monday, the Pentagon confirmed that Garcia had been discharged from the Army for mental health reasons. Garcia entered the Army in June 2008 but was terminated three months later without completing his initial entry training. He was not assigned a specific job or “military occupational specialty.” A Defense Department official told NPR that Army staff “quickly identified he was a problem.”
