Vybz Kartel is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall recording artist, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. His real name is Adidja Azim Palmer.

Teenager Vybz Kartel launched his career in 1993 with the publication of his first song, “Love Fat Woman,” on Alvin Reid’s label “One Heart” under the stage name “Adi Banton” in honour of Buju Banton.

Following the group’s breakup, Palmer continued to be a member of the trio known as “Vybz Cartel” and became Bounty Killer’s protege. He claims to have co-written approximately 30 songs with this ensemble, including “Gal Clown” (a song).

After a streak of successes in Jamaica, Kartel gained notoriety in 2003. The year came to a close with a premeditated altercation with Ninjaman on stage at the Sting dancehall event in Kartel’s hometown of Portmore.

Although Kartel’s manager first put the blame on Ninjaman, Kartel quickly apologized to the organizers of Ninjaman and Sting for the altercation. The two musicians came in front of the media four days after the event to announce a resolution of their differences and to put a stop to any hostility.

An American businessman named Corey Todd signed Vybz Kartel to an endorsement arrangement for Vybz Rum in 2008. Todd and Kartel’s connection turned into a business partnership. They jointly introduced Street Vybz Rum and the Daggerin Condom. Todd next bought Asylum, the most well-known dancehall nightclub in Jamaica, which became the venue for their weekly Street Vybz Thursday event.

The manufacture of Street Vybz Rum was halted in 2011 as a result of a dispute between Kartel and Todd. In spite of Kartel’s continued incarceration, the two were able to resolve their issues and resume their work in 2012.
