The First Slam Dunk anime film earned 14.33 billion Yen at the Japanese box office, beating Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering with You theatrical earnings, becoming the ninth highest-grossing anime film in the country and 15th highest-grossing anime film of all time with Shinkai’s Suzume at 14th place. 

Based on the manga series by Takehiko Inoue, Slam Dunk manga has gained recognition from readers all across the globe with its debut in the early 1990s. Well-known for exciting basketball gameplay and attention-grabbing characters, the series has collected a massive fanbase over the years.

Slam Dunk is an old Japanese sports manga written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. It started and concluded its serialization from 1990 to 1996 and has collected 31 volumes after being published in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine in the Weekly Shōnen Jump section.

The manga then got an anime adaptation by Toei Animation, which premiered in October 1993 and ended in March 1996. With 170 million copies sold, Slam Dunk became the seventh best-selling manga in history.

As of today, The First Slam Dunk earned 260 million dollars worldwide, including 14.33 billion Yen in Japan alone. Its impressive earnings led to the achievement of the fifth highest-grossing anime film of all time. In the first two days of its release, the movie grossed 1.296 billion Yen in Japan, taking the top spot at the Japan Box Office. 

In South Korea, it beat Your Name and became the highest-grossing anime film in history, with earnings of 30.38 million dollars and 3,818,000 tickets sold. If that wasn’t enough, it took second place as the highest-grossing film of 2023 with 35 million dollars.

In China, it broke the record for the highest pre-sales for an animated movie and the highest IMAX opening weekend for an international animated film, making a total of 75.8 million dollars.

Synopsis and Characters

Shohoku’s incredibly fast “point guard” and strategic genius, Ryota Miyagi, embodies the utmost essence of speed, wit, and composure on the basketball court. Coming from Okinawa and inspired by his older brother’s heritage as a local basketball star, Ryota Miyagi developed a strong passion for the sport from his childhood.

In his second year of high school, he joins the famous Shohoku High School basketball team, and with his teammates, Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui, he trains for the highly awaited Inter-High School National Championship.

Aiming to dethrone the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School, Ryota outplays his opponents all while maintaining his cool under pressure, adding heroic qualities to his character and making him a precious asset to the Shohoku team as they gear up for their most challenging task yet.
