1. Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Those of you who are into rock music undoubtedly have heard of Kurt Cobain, the founder, guitarist, and lead vocalist of the band Nirvana.

Being famous comes with a price. In this case, Kurt Cobain’s heroin addiction was the main culprit. This was noticeable when Cobain sang in Munich in 1994, the band’s final show.

The concert lasted only 80 minutes as Kurt’s voice became increasingly trashed as he performed each song, all due to the use of drugs.

Cause of Death: The singer had been stating the obvious about what was about to happen next when his body was found unresponsive in his residence in Seattle, Washington. It was a case of suicide by gunshots. He died on April 5, 1994, at the age of only 27, leaving behind his wife and daughter.

The body was discovered three days later after his death on April 8, 1995, by an electrician who was installing a security system. Later investigations revealed that the musician had taken extremely high doses of heroin and Valium before taking his own life.

2. Tupac Shakur (1971-1996)

The American rapper 2Pac is still well-known for being one of the best-selling music artists, as his music sold more than 75 million records worldwide. Do you know why his music was so famous?

Well, he wrote songs about fatherhood, uplifting women, as well as the life of gangsta rappers that were violent and filled with drugs. The rapper was at the peak of his career when he was taken away from us in 1996 at the age of 24.

Cause of Death: The celebrity death that shocked everyone was when 2Pac was hit with a 40 caliber Glock 22 pistol on September 7 in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas at 11.15 pm. He had one wound in his arm, one in his thigh, and two in his chest. The musician died in hospital six days later on September 13, leaving behind his wife.

3. Steve Irwin (1962-2006)

At some point in your life, I’m sure you must have come across Australian zoo keeper, wildlife educator, and television personality Steve Irwin who is known as the ‘Crocodile Hunter.’ I myself am not an animal lover, but yes, at times, I did watch Irwin do his thing with crocodiles.

Steve was known for risking his life regarding his profession, as he was in near-death situations multiple times.

Cause of Death: It all came to an end on September 4, 2006, when Steve Irwin was filming in the Great Barrier Reef and he was stabbed in the chest by a stingray barb. Although Irwin pulled its barb out of his chest before becoming unconscious, sadly, he couldn’t make it and left us at the age of 44.

The cameras caught his last moments where his final words were, ‘I’m dying.’ The wildlife educator was given mouth-to-mouth for an hour, but the injury was too much to bear. Irwin left behind his wife and two children, who are continuing his legacy of taking care of animals.

4. Heath Ledger (1979-2008)

Ok, this has got me all emotional now. I have been trying to hold back my tears all this time, but this is one celebrity death that shocked everyone. Being a Batman fan, I still can’t get over how the Joker from ‘The Dark Knight’ isn’t with us anymore.

Heath Ledger was an Australian actor who later moved to the USA for his film career. The actor had starred in 20 films, amongst which his performance in ‘The Dark Night’ earned him popularity and universal recognition, which was released a few months after he passed away.

Cause of Death: His drug use and weed consumption ended his life on September 22, 2008, at the age of 29. The actor often had trouble sleeping and had to take pills to overcome insomnia. Gradually Ledger became addicted dangerously and took an overdose of several drugs together, leading to his death, leaving behind his partner and daughter.

The actor’s body was discovered by his housekeeper and massage therapist lying by his bed in an unconscious state. Later, autopsy reports revealed that his death was accidental and suicide.

Although Ledger is not among us, we still miss ‘The Joker.’ In my personal opinion, he played the character better than anyone else.

5. Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

Does the ‘King of Pop’ really need an introduction? He has been the most well-known global figure in the world of pop till today. Not only was Michael Jackson famous for his music and dancing, but his personal life was a matter of interest to everyone.

Some of the dance moves, such as the robot and the moonwalk, were named by the pop singer. Michael started his solo career in 1971 and reached fame in 1979 with his hit album ‘Off the Wall.’

However, the singer hit the tabloids quite a few times due to his rapid change in appearance, indecent behavior, and lifestyle. He was accused of child abuse several times, but there was no evidence to press charges.

Cause of Death: Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50, in his North Carolwood home. The singer’s body was discovered by his physician, who said that Michael had a weak pulse and was not breathing. Although paramedics and doctors performed resuscitation for more than an hour, it was too late. We had lost another celebrity who will always remain with us through his music and dance moves.

Two months later, in August 2009, investigators confirmed that Michael Jackson’s death was a homicide. Apparently, his doctor had administered a dangerous combination of propofol alongside sedatives which caused a cardiac arrest leading to his death.

The doctor was then charged with involuntary manslaughter and served two years behind bars.

6. Brittany Murphy (1977-2009)

The American actress was well known for her role as Tau Fraiser in the movie ‘Clueless.’ The actress also starred in ‘8 Mile’ along with Eminem, for which she was recognized in 2002. Her final film ‘ Something Wicked’ was released in 2004 after her departure.

Cause of Death: Brittany was suffering from pneumonia for quite some time, and on 20 December 2009, she was found collapsed in her bathroom at her residence in Los Angeles. After which, the actress was taken to hospital and lost her battle against a massive cardiac arrest.

7. Whitney Houston (1963-2012)

The American singer Whitney Houston is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, as well as known for her acting career. Some of her most famous songs are ‘Where so broken hearts go’ released in 1988, and ‘Saving all my love for you’ released in 1985.

However, her drug use was fairly visible as she was seen to be deranged when making public appearances.

Cause of Death: Whitney Houston was found drowned in her bathroom on February 11, 2012, at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

According to investigations, she had drowned due to heart disease, and the singer had consumed cocaine before her death. Nonetheless, it was ruled as an accident.

8. Paul Walker (1973-2013)

Life is unpredictable; that’s all I can say, especially after hearing the news of American actor Paul Walker’s death which is still hard to digest for many of us. We grew up watching the actor who played Brian O’ Conner, one of the lead roles in many sequels of the movie,’ The Fast and the Furious,’ from where he gained fame.

Although he was never replaced in the franchise, the parts of the film released after his departure seem incomplete.

Cause of Death: Shockingly, on 30 November 2013, we all got the news of Paul Walker being involved in an accident where he was pronounced dead on the spot. The actor, aged 40 at that time, was in the passenger seat of his friend’s Porsche when the car crashed into a tree at 100mph and instantly burst into flames after the driver (Walker’s friend) lost control of the vehicle.

Paul Walker was filming for ‘The Fast and Furious 7’ at the time of his death. The film was later released in 2015, where the song, ‘See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth was a tribute to the deceased actor.

Walker left behind his wife and only daughter at the time of his death.

9. Robin Williams (1976-2014)

There are many celebrity deaths that have shocked everyone till now, but the loss of the greatest comedian of all time, Robin Williams, hits you differently. Hollywood indeed lost a gem, if nothing else.

If you haven’t watched the film, Mrs. Doubtfire, please make sure you do as soon as you are done reading the article. This is one movie of his that I have watched countless times. It’s funny, emotional, and has a bit of everything. In my opinion, it is one of the best works of Robin Williams.

Cause of Death: The actor, aged 63, left us for good on August 11, 2014. His death was reported as suicide. Apparently, Robin Williams had been fighting depression and was suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

The actor was found hanging by a closet door frame with several cuts on his wrist, and many personal belongings of his were found near the body.

10. Wrestler Chyna (1969-2016)

Are there any wrestling fans out there? Oh my God, I used to be addicted to WWF and could wait for the yearly events, such as WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and so on, to be aired on television. Most of the wrestlers were men, and in my eyes, Chyna was the only lady wrestler that could actually fight. I remember she always used to wear black and leave her hair down to give a rough and tough look to her opponents.

Chyna started her career in 1995 with WWF and left in 2001. She even won against wrestlers Triple H, Kurt Angle, and many others. The wrestler was also a sex symbol and was featured twice in Playboy magazine.

Cause of Death: Chyna’s suicidal death was caused by an overdose of alcohol combined with a mixture of anxiety drugs. The wrestler was only 46 when she was found dead in her residence on April 20, 2016.

11. George Michael (1963-2016)

‘Wake me up before you go by the band Wham is the song lyrics that come to mind upon hearing George Michael’s name. The English singer and songwriter was famous for his vocal performance and also for the many awards he had received throughout his life which include the Grammy awards and Billboard Music Awards, along with many others.

Besides music, the singer was an HIV/AIDs charity fundraiser who announced that he was gay in 1998.

Sadly Michael had a few bad records, which included drugs and getting in trouble with the law which landed him in jail a few times.

Cause of Death: George Michael’s death was natural; he died of heart disease on Christmas day in 2016 at his home in Goring-on-Thames. At the time, the singer was 53 years old.

12. Prince (1958-2016)

The multi-talented Prince, who was an American singer and songwriter, and producer, was mainly famous for his high-pitched screams while singing on stage. Besides that, he could play almost any instrument and did so while recording his songs. Most of Prince’s music was all about different styles, which include pop, jazz, rock, hip-hop, and so on.

Price was well-known throughout his career, which started in 1978 and continued till he passed away in 2016.

Cause of Death: The singer had been suffering from influenza since the beginning of 2016 and was admitted to the hospital a few times to seek treatment.

On 21 April 2016, the singer was found lying unresponsive in an elevator. Although CPR was performed on him, sadly, he didn’t make it. The celebrity’s death was a pure accident as he had died from an accidental overdose of the medicine fentanyl, according to investigations.

13. Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

Kobe Bryant leaving us was an untimely celebrity death that shocked everyone. The NBA player who had been with the Los Angeles Lakers for twenty years is still known to be one of the legends in basketball. He had won several medals and also had been a winner of 5 NBA championships.

However, in 2003, Bryant was charged by the police with sexual assault. The victim was a hotel employee who was, but later a lawsuit was settled, and charges were dropped.

Cause of Death: I must say that when death comes, there is nothing one can do to stop it. On January 26, 2020, Kobe Bryant and his thirteen-year-old daughter were among the two who lost their lives in a helicopter crash that was carrying seven others, including the pilot.

The helicopter had crashed into the side of a mountain in Calabasas, leaving everyone killed. Later reports revealed that there was no technical reason for the accident, but in fact, the pilot was to blame as he was not well trained.

Kobe Bryant left his wife and three daughters to mourn his death.

14. Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

Chadwick Boseman, the American actor, was mostly known for playing Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor starred in four MCU films from 2016-2019 that earned him multiple awards. Boseman also starred in other Hollywood movies and television shows.

Cause of Death: The actor was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, which he hid from the public but decided to go forward with his actions while seeking treatment.

Sadly he breathed his last at the age of 43 on August 28, 2020, as pop had reached stage IV and the implications had increased. Chad Bostwick had died in his Los Angeles home with his wife by his side.

15. Lisa Marie Presley (1968-2023)

I’m sure by reading the name of this celebrity; you can easily figure out who she was related to. Yes, Lisa Marie Presley, the American singer, and songwriter was the only daughter of singer Elvis Presley.

Lisa had released three albums throughout her career and also many non-single albums from 2003-2018. The singer got married four times, and her ex-husbands included singer Michael Jackson and actor Nicholas Cage as well.

Cause of Death: Lisa died from cardiac arrest at the age of 54 on January 12, 2023, in her home situated in California. She left behind her three daughters.

Final Thoughts

The 15 celebrity deaths that shocked everyone are just a small fraction of the famous people we will always miss. Fame is not always about money and awards. It does have its dark sides too. A lot of celebrities get involved with drugs which later get the best of them and, in some cases, are the cause of death.

We lost singer Whitney Houston, wrestler Chyna, and actors Robin Williams and Heath Ledger all because of their drug addiction. Just think how powerful the addiction must have been that fame had no place in their lives.

The suicidal deaths obviously have left us shattered, but some of the deaths were accidents or illnesses, which celebrities cannot be blamed for. I mean, the passing away of Kobe Bryant and Paul Walker shocked me the most.

Can you imagine what the family members of these celebrities went through after losing them? I mean, for those who had kids, it’s just devastating.

That’s all I have for you today. In all honesty, writing about the deaths of so many people is something that truly takes over your emotions.
