Everyone needs a laugh now and then. What better way to do that than watch a good horror movie that will give you chills and make you laugh simultaneously? With the holidays knocking at the door, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy some quality films.
Dramatic or thriller movies are great, don’t get us wrong, but sometimes we need something light. Comedies are precisely that. They don’t go too deep into the story; instead here to put a smile on your face for the time being.

Horror-comedy is one of the most common and popular genres in film. It’s the perfect mix of both worlds. You’re laughing til you can’t breathe? There comes the ghost. Are things too intense for you to cope with? Something funny always happens.

Re-Animator (1985)
Herbert West is a brilliant doctor, but his works are questionable. It’s something out of an H.P. Lovecraft book. If you love H.P., you’ll probably love this one as well. West brings the dead back alive.
This movie is a rollercoaster of both horror and fun. You’ll be left wondering, “what did I just see?” The character is played by the genius of Jeffrey Combs and absolutely is a wild ride. Stuart Gordon directs the movie. It’s based on Lovecraft’s “Herbert West Reanimator.”
Be careful; it has an X rating so it might be graphic to some.
IMDb Rating: 7.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Played by John Landis, famous for their works in The Blues Brothers, Coming to America, and so much more. Both are excellent horror-comedy films, but another quite popular one that comes to mind is “An American Werewolf in London.”
The Emmy awardee had an outstanding performance in the movie. An American Werewolf in London is a classic before An American Werewolf in Paris, a sequel to the original.
The story follows two young college students (David and Jack) who were attacked by a werewolf on their way to England. David survived the bite of the werewolf, whereas their friend didn’t. David is lived with memories and nightmares of their friend. The story then goes with David’s life from man to werewolf.
We must say, trying to put on a summary without any significant spoilers is hefty work. What’s heftier is that the summary doesn’t do the movie justice.
IMDb Rating: 7.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 89%
This Is The End (2013)
We promise you this is not your average; the world is about to end type of movie. The story follows a Hollywood actor and their friends, directed by the very talented Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
The Hollywood actor in the movie is Franco, whose party is stopped by an apocalypse. Franco and their friends struggle to stay in the same world because the world threatens to end.
Sounds too intense? That’s about right, don’t worry, this is a funny movie. The movie is relatively recent and modern, so it’s the perfect fit for today’s people. It’s an ideal formula to keep you hooked and laughing.
IMDb Rating: 6.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 83%
What We Do In The Shadows (2014)
Are you tired of watching average serious documentaries about anything and everything? Buckle up for this mockumentary. The mockumentary is a new genre of film that takes serious documentaries and makes a comedic film of it.
What We Do In The Shadows is a mockumentary movie about three vampires and their lives. They live under the same roof and often hunt for their new prey together.
Unlike most vampire films, the story here is pretty light. Not too brutal, just the lives of the vampires shown funnily. If you’re looking for something that’s funny and does not make you question the corner of your room before sleeping, this is the perfect movie for you.
IMDb Rating: 8.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 98%
Gremlins (1984)
Gremlins is a classic. It’s a must-watch movie, especially during Christmas time. Although it’s a horror-comedy film, it has a strong message. The movie mocks materialism.
The story is about a person who wants to gift his son and finds the gift in a small shop. The shopkeeper didn’t want to sell the “mogwai” to the person. But then he sells it to him regardless with a caution that we all know by heart, “Don’t get him wet, keep him out of bright light, and never feed him after midnight.”
Spoiler: the caution was broken.
IMDb Rating: 7.3/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 86%
Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Jennifer’s Body is about a high school teenager who gets possessed by a demon. The teenager is Jennifer and is played by Megan Fox. The movie is a mix of horror, fun, and of course, cannibalism.
Jennifer fills her appetite for flesh by taking it out on the men who have never had a chance with her. The story continues with Jennifer’s friend finding out what’s going on and trying to put an end to the chaos. Although Jennifer’s friend is a nerd who loves bookish, there is more to the story.
The movie is another modern-day classic and has been blowing up over the years by Megan Fox’s talent and charisma.
IMDb Rating: 5.4/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 45%
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Young Frankenstein is one of the earliest horror-comedy movies. We love black and white films. It has a vintage and scarier aura to it.
With the incredible acting of the casts of Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, and others, the movie is a stayer. Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) discovers they have received a massive inheritance from their grandfather. This leads the man to arrive at his grandfather’s house in Transylvania, where he finds a book with his grandfather’s experiments.
Frankenstein then continues his grandfather’s legacy and starts the experiments again to be welcomed by different problems every time.
IMDb Rating: 8/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
Eating Raoul (1982)
Eating Raoul is one of the dark horror-comedy films on this list. The movie is about a married couple who goes on killing sprees. They rob the people and get money for their restaurant.
This is a cannibalistic film. The movie is in the horror-comedy genre, but it’s very laid-back. Meaning you probably don’t have to worry about jump scares. Funnily enough, it’s so laid back that it will give you chills.
If you’re into horror and dominating women, this is the movie for you 😉
IMDb Rating: 6.8/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 86%
The Love Witch (2016)
This is the most recently made horror-comedy film on our list. Still, the movie follows an aesthetic inspired by the ‘60s. The movie is like a spell; you’re bound to finish once you start it.
The dreamy aesthetic gives the movie a retro vibe that can keep viewers absorbed. You get to Samantha Robinson in the most stunning way possible. Samantha plays the main character in the movie (Elaine), a young witch.
The story goes on about Elaine trying to find true love. The question is, how far do we go for love? Elaine makes spells in her apartment that makes men be seduced her. However, the horror is when the men get stuck with her. Afterward, when she actually meets her true love, her urge and desperation to be with them turn her into a monster.
Even though the movie is a horror-comedy film, it’s about a female getting past the taboo. The movie is addictingly intense, making you watch it from start to end in one sitting.
IMDb Rating: 6.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
Hocus Pocus (1993)
So, you’re telling us you have not watched one of the most-watched horror-comedy movies of all time? Hocus Pocus has been a classic since the ‘90s and a must-watch movie for a good laugh.
The movie begins with three adventurous teenagers, Salem, Mass, Thora, Allison, and Max. They find an abandoned house together and decide to explore, only for Max to free three witches. The witches are the bad guys. The movie goes on about teenagers trying to fight evil to stop the witches from reaching immortality through a magical cat.
Oh hey, another good news is that we are getting a Hocus Pocus sequel released in 2022. Nearly after three decades!

The Final Words
Oh boy! These are some excellent movies. Many of the movies on the list are classics, in case you don’t want anything that’s too modernized. We hear you, boomers.
There are many more horror-comedy films than these, but this list was near-perfect for us. Considering the list was full of the best horror-comedy movies of all time.
Conveniently enough, the horror-comedy genre has become more popular over the years, which is understandable; not everyone wants to have their heart at their hands and crawl under a blanket for jump scares. Every now and then, the light is good.
We hope you have fun watching these as much as we did!
