Replays of the incident showed Laura Wienroither with her leg buckling while chasing a loose ball. Fans watching the game immediately feared for the worst. Arsenal have now confirmed that Laura suffered an ACL injury.

The 24-year-old defender is the fourth player to suffer from an ACL injury following Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema and Leah Williamson.

Following the incident, Miedema, who ruptured her ACL back in December during Arsenal’s match against Lyon, shared a photo of the four of them on Instagram and on Twitter.

Vivianne Miedema offered an ACL injury update as she confirmed she’ll miss the Women’s World Cup due to the ACL injury she sustained in December 2022 against Lyon.

Miedema shared the photo, which appears to have been ten shortly after Wienroither’s injury, with the player still in her Arsenal kit. In the photo, Laura is on an examination bed while Mead, Miedema and Williamson, are surrounding her all with smiles despite the circumstances.

Miedema captioned the photo as:

At least we will all be in the gym together. Ps. ACL group is full now. Please no more.”

Arsenal’s injured players expected return date

In general, players can te up to nine months to fully recover from an ACL injury. However, many players often sit on the sidelines for much longer.

Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Mead who ruptured her ACL in November is the closest to me a return. Reports state that she is already back running on grass again. Previously Mead stated about her desires of securing a spot in England’s squad for the Women’s World Cup.

While Miedema has around three months to me a comeback, Williamson and Wienroither will likely not play any football up until 2024. Arsenal is in a tough spot and will likely have to finish their season missing a number of key players. Team captain Kim Little is also currently ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Currently in the Women’s Super League, the Gunners have five matches left to play following their loss to Wolfsburg. Arsenal may need to win all their remaining games to have a chance of finishing in the top three. This will assure them a spot for next season’s Champions League.

However, as things stand, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all vying for a top of the table finish. In short, this season is arguably the most competitive WSL title race in history.
